TREES
Shademaster Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos 'Shademaster') has a rounded
canopy and provides light shade that allows sunlight to filter through, making
this a good tree for use near a lawn. It is thornless and seedless, growing 40
to 45 feet in height. Hardy to zone 4, this tree is tolerant of urban conditions
such as poor soils, a wide pH range, soil compaction, flooding, salt, heat and
drought.
Kwanzan cherry tree is the showiest of all Japanese cherry trees. The Kwanzan
cherry trees most awesome feature is its bundles of large double pink blossoms.
The blossoms on the Kwanzan cherry tree last longer than those of other
flowering cherries. After awhile the flowers begin to fade and the tree is left
with green leaves and bark. Its bark is somewhat glossy. The flowers on this
tree are very unusual due to their large size.
Kwanzan cherry tree is in the United States, but are primarily found in Japan.
This is one of the Washington basin cherry trees given to the United States by
Japan years ago for planting at our nation's capital. This tree blooms in mid to
late April. Unlike other ornamental cherry trees, the leaves of the Kwanzan
cherry begin to grow while the tree is still in bloom. It is also the hardiest
ornamental cherry tree and its bark is somewhat glossy
Crimson King Maple Acer Platanoides
Crimson King Maples have an excellent dense maroon red foliage all summer.
Straight trunk with a well shaped crown. A Crimson king will give you dense
shade when mature. The leaves on a Crimson King are similar in shape to a Sugar
Maple but like most Norway Maples they do suffer from leaf scorch which browns
the leaf edges in late summer. Tar spots can be a minor problem on the leaves of
a Crimson King but seldom do any harm. Crimson King trunks can crack from
sunscald on the southern side during the winter in zone 4 causing some trunk
decay, but the tree usually remains intact. Crimson King will attain a height of
50' or more and are hardy from zone 4-7. The tree is easily transplanted, grows
quickly, is adapted to a wide variety of soils including alkaline, sand, clay
and acid soils. We grow Crimson King maples in rootbags up to 3" diameter trunks
and 15' high. This simplifies the digging process and assures of nearly summer
long digging. Crimsons can also tolerate coastal conditions. Crimson King also
tolerates extremely dry soils and polluted air. Well adapted to street tree
plantings, it is often overused. Crimson King Maple's dense shade and shallow
root system competes with lawn grasses, and the shallow roots can make mowing
under the tree difficult. The shallow roots can heave sidewalks so be certain to
locate the tree 4 to 6 feet away.
Corylus avellana 'Contorta
The Contorted Filbet or Harry Lauder's walking stick (sometimes
called corkscrew hazelnut) is a European filbert cultivar that was
discovered growing in an English hedgerow in the mid-1800s. This
deciduous, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub which typically grows 8-10
feet tall and will spread 8-10 feet wide. features, as the cultivar
name suggests, twisted and spiraling branches, twigs and leaves. The
flowers appear in spring in showy, 2-3" long, yellowish brown
catkins. Although the species is commonly grown commercially for nut
production, this cultivar usually does not produce fruits (nuts).
Round, double-toothed, light green leaves (2-3" long) typically turn
an undistinguished yellow in fall. After leaf drop, the contorted
form of the branches becomes quite noticeable and provides winter
interest.
The Babylon weeping willow is
one of the prettiest blooming willow trees that you will
see. The Babylon will tolerate moist soils, but need
lots of water to survive! These trees have long and
drooping branches and are directly related to plants
that come out of China. This beautiful weeping willow
tree is widely cultivated as an ornamental type tree. It
loves to be in the direct sunlight, but prefers the
chill in the winter time!
It has a flower color that is yellow and grows just
perfect, although sometimes you may need to prune it in
the summer or fall, as it can become prone to different
diseased very easily. Planting a garden under this tree
is impossible, as it has roots that will take over all
the ground under it, so be sure to plant these way away
from any septic or sewer lines! These trees will vary in
height and can ranges anywhere from 30 feet up to 50
feet, the best zones for a taller tree are zones 6, 7,
8, 9, and 10. These trees will thrive in almost any type
of soil, but enjoy acid type soil the best for the best
results in height and flower
Green Mountain Sugar
Maple, 'Acer saccharum "Green Mountain", is
a very handsome deciduous tree with leathery
leaves. This showy tree is upright and oval
in shape. This tree is noted for its
improved performance in dry restricted
growing areas such as areas close to
pavement. The Green Mountain carries all of
the characteristics of the Sugar Maple with
the strong limbs and the gorgeous fall color
and the seeds are inconspicuous and causes
no significant litter problems.
The Green Mountain is used for wide tree
lawns, screens, shade, and as specimen tree.
It is also good street tree. The leathery
leaves and durable foliage resists heat and
drought. Sugar Maple is among the most shade
tolerant of large deciduous trees. Like
other maples, its shade tolerance is
manifested in its ability to germinate and
persist under a closed canopy as an
understory plant.
